Micheaux Award & Film Labs (MAFL) is set to host the Micheaux Awards on February 28th, 2025, an event dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of Arkansas’ creatives of color in film, media, and storytelling. The event and award, named in honor of pioneering filmmaker Oscar Micheaux, will highlight and honor the 2024 and 2025 Micheaux Award recipients. From groundbreaking films and documentaries to thought-provoking media that challenges narratives, Micheaux awardees continue to push the boundaries of storytelling. Their work entertains, educates, and amplifies voices that deserve to be heard.
"We are excited to recognize the immense talent within Arkansas’ creative communities through the Micheaux Awards," said Dr. Airic Hughes, chair of the Micheaux Award committee. "Additionally, we are thankful for our longstanding partners at the Fayetteville Film Fest and excited to engage with more of the film communities statewide. We believe the celebration event will help inspire more creatives in Arkansas to success." Since its inception in 2020, the Micheaux Award program has provided $40,000 directly to Arkansas based filmmakers and creatives.
The Micheaux Awards will take place on February 28th, 2025 at 6:30pm at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, with more details available at the Micheaux Award & Film Labs website. Creatives, industry professionals, and supporters are encouraged to attend and engage in this celebration of excellence.
About the Micheaux Award & Film Labs
Micheaux Award & Film Labs (MAFL) is dedicated to providing a platform for Arkansas creatives of color in film, media, and entertainment. Through funding, programming, mentorship, and advocacy, MAFL works to ensure that underrepresented voices have the resources and visibility needed to thrive in the state.
At ACS, we believe that if we provide filmmakers an arena to exhibit their talents, and film enthusiasts a healthy diet of quality programming, we can inspire more Arkansans to make and watch more films. By supporting filmmakers, festivals, theaters and young people interested in filmmaking throughout the state, we hope to create statewide network, pool Arkansas’s resources and be an umbrella organization that feeds all things film. We believe a rising tide lifts all boats.
To be a filmmaker, we have to connect to create. A painter needs a brush, paint and a canvas. A director needs a writer, a cinematographer, a sound mixer, production designer, editor, actors, distributors, and an audience. We cannot do it alone. This art form forces one to collaborate and thus, creates jobs. Filmmaking is unique in the arts in this way. It takes an army.
