Filmland is bringing one of the most recognizable voices in American film home to Arkansas. On Friday, August 14, Variety will present Matthew McConaughey with the Variety Legend & Groundbreaker Award, an honor reserved for artists who have broken barriers in the industry and withstood the test of time.
McConaughey accepts the award for a career that has never stopped surprising people, from his breakout in Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused in 1993, to his Academy Award and Golden Globe winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club, to his Emmy-nominated performance in the first season of True Detective. He'll soon be seen in Andrew Patterson's The Rivals of Amziah King.
Following a screening of The Rivals of Amziah King, McConaughey will join ACS co-founder Jeff Nichols for a Q+A. Nichols, who directed Mud and The Bikeriders, first worked with McConaughey on Mud, which makes this conversation feel less like an interview and more like a reunion.
"The Arkansas Cinema Society is elated to welcome Matthew McConaughey back to Arkansas and to Filmland this August to receive the Variety Legend & Groundbreaker Award," said Filmland Executive Director Kathryn Tucker. "After his unforgettable collaboration with ACS co-founder Jeff Nichols on Mud, this truly feels like a homecoming. We're grateful to our partners at Variety, and we're honored to continue what has become an annual Filmland tradition of celebrating legendary and groundbreaking filmmakers. The onstage conversation between Matthew and Jeff will undoubtedly be one not to be missed by our enthusiastic audience of film lovers in Arkansas."
Deep within the backwoods of rural Oklahoma, charismatic and musically gifted Amziah King (McConaughey) herds a bluegrass-playing band of misfits while overseeing the premier honey-making operation in town. When Amziah’s estranged foster daughter unexpectedly returns, Amziah leaps at the possibility to renew connection and create a family business. But the honey game is ruthless, and Amziah’s rivals threaten to destroy everything he has built.
